LIHEAP
Name of the Program:
Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)
Counties Served:
Blount, Cherokee, DeKalb, Jackson, Marshall, St. Clair, and Jefferson County
Program Description:
Grant funded by the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs to assist applicants in paying their electric or gas bills. Clients are eligible for one LIHEAP regular heating payment and one LIHEAP regular cooling payment per year. Clients who qualify for crisis assistance are eligible for an additional LIHEAP crisis heating payment and LIHEAP crisis cooling payment per program year. Funds are paid directly to utility companies and vendors.
Application Process:
Interested applicants should schedule an appointment at their county’s office and bring the required documents listed below. At the appointment, clients will complete an application for the LIHEAP program and an award will be made on their behalf to their utility vendor by the agency.
Award Information:
The award amount differs based on household income and number of individuals within the household. A crisis award will cover the lowest amount possible to prevent utility disconnection.
Document Needed:
Photo ID of applicant, Social Security Cards for all members of the household, Proof of income for the previous month for all adults over the age of 18 (if the applicant had no income source for the previous month, they will need to complete a Declaration of Household Income form), utility bill in the applicant’s name, completed LIHEAP application, completed LIHEAP vendor agreement form, and completed Alabama Power Portal form (for those applying for assistance on an Alabama Power Bill).
